Ottawan Biography – History of the French Disco Group

Ottawan

Ottawan is a French disco act best known for the international hits “D.I.S.C.O.” and “Hands Up (Give Me Your Heart)”. Formed in Paris in 1979, Ottawan became one of the recognizable names of European disco at the beginning of the 1980s.

The original duo featured Patrick Jean-Baptiste and Annette, working with the production and songwriting team of Daniel Vangarde and Jean Kluger. Their combination of memorable melodies, dance rhythms and multilingual recordings helped Ottawan reach audiences across Europe and beyond.

The Origins of Ottawan

Ottawan was formed in Paris, France, in 1979. Before joining the project, Patrick Jean-Baptiste had performed with his own group, Black Underground. Producer Daniel Vangarde discovered Patrick on the Paris music scene and brought him into a new disco project together with Annette.

Patrick Jean-Baptiste and Annette

Patrick Jean-Baptiste became the distinctive male voice and performer associated with Ottawan, while Annette completed the original male-and-female duo. Their vocals, dance-oriented performances and visual presentation became an important part of Ottawan’s early identity.

Daniel Vangarde and Jean Kluger

Ottawan’s early recordings were closely associated with producers and songwriters Daniel Vangarde and Jean Kluger, who were already active in European pop and disco music.

The name Ottawan is a reference to Ottawa, the capital of Canada. The Canadian-inspired name gave the Paris-based project an immediately distinctive international identity.

D.I.S.C.O. and Ottawan’s International Breakthrough

The Release of D.I.S.C.O.

Ottawan’s breakthrough came with “D.I.S.C.O.”, first released at the end of 1979 and subsequently becoming a major European hit in 1980.

The song was recorded in both French and English versions and quickly became Ottawan’s signature recording. Its spelling-based chorus, energetic disco production and memorable vocal arrangement made it particularly well suited to radio, television and dance floors.

D.I.S.C.O. Chart Success

“D.I.S.C.O.” achieved significant international chart success. In the United Kingdom, the single reached No. 2 on the Official Singles Chart and remained on the chart for 18 weeks. The song also reached No. 1 in Norway and achieved high chart positions in several other European countries.

The success of “D.I.S.C.O.” established Ottawan internationally and remains one of the defining moments in the group’s history.

Ottawan’s Biggest Hits

Following the success of “D.I.S.C.O.”, Ottawan released a series of disco singles that expanded the group’s international repertoire.

You’re O.K.

“You’re O.K.” was released in 1980, with a French-language counterpart titled “T’es O.K.”. The single continued the upbeat dance style established by “D.I.S.C.O.” and charted in several European markets.

Hands Up (Give Me Your Heart)

In 1981, Ottawan achieved another major international success with “Hands Up (Give Me Your Heart)”. The song became one of the group’s most recognizable recordings and reached No. 3 on the UK Official Singles Chart, spending 15 weeks on the chart.

A French version, “Haut les mains (donne-moi ton cœur)”, was also recorded. The combination of a simple sing-along chorus, strong dance rhythm and international versions helped make “Hands Up” one of Ottawan’s enduring signature songs.

Other Ottawan Songs

Ottawan’s repertoire from the early 1980s also includes songs such as “Crazy Music”, “Shalalala Song”, “Help, Get Me Some Help” and “Hello Rio!”. Together with “D.I.S.C.O.” and “Hands Up”, these recordings form the core of the group’s classic disco catalogue.

Ottawan’s Musical Style

Ottawan’s music is primarily associated with disco and Eurodisco. The recordings typically combine strong dance rhythms, memorable choruses, bright melodic arrangements and direct, easy-to-follow lyrics.

Another important part of Ottawan’s international appeal was the use of different language versions. Recording songs in both French and English allowed the group to reach audiences across multiple European markets during an era when disco music was becoming increasingly international.

International Success and Chart Legacy

Ottawan achieved its greatest commercial success between 1979 and the early 1980s. In the United Kingdom alone, the group placed four singles on the Official Singles Chart. Two of them became Top 10 hits: “D.I.S.C.O.” reached No. 2 and “Hands Up (Give Me Your Heart)” reached No. 3.
